Position band: Specialist (Global Grade 2)

Reports to: Head of Commercial Law

Type of position: Full-time / Permanent

 

The Opportunity

We currently have an opportunity for a Law Clerk in our Legal Department based in our Toronto office.

This Law Clerk will assist other members of the newly formed Commercial team with general commercial, ESG, and communications matters.  The clerk will also be integral to ensuring that the Commercial team and the broader legal team stay organized and work efficiently through file management, precedent and template development, and managing business self-service tools.  This position will also help accelerate the legal team’s strategic use of technology to create efficiencies and consistency across team members.

Principal Accountabilities

In addition to following McDonald’s policies and procedures, principal accountabilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist other members of the Commercial team with commercial/contract, ESG, government relations/regulatory, and communications matters.

  • Identify and implement process improvements and working efficiencies in partnership with the Commercial and broader legal team.

  • Build and manage precedent and template documents and augment similar existing department resources.

  • Assist in updating and maintaining a self-service tools and legal information website for the business.

  • Help to ensure team collaboration, information sharing, organization, and appropriate use of technology.

  • Identify and leverage technologies within McDonald’s to create efficiencies and enable greater consistency across team members.

  • Manage the outside counsel invoicing system and help to ensure team stays with allocated outside counsel budget.

  • Foster trust and work collaboratively with all internal and external stakeholders.

  • Connect with the global legal function to share best practices between and among the market and global teams.

     

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience at a law firm or in-house at a corporation or national organization in clerk or legal operations role.

  • Licensed as a paralegal, a law clerk designation or equivalent law clerk education is a plus.

  • Understanding of emerging technologies, include AI tools, and standard workplace technologies, including Teams and Sharepoint, and an ability to create documents and organize files using these technologies.

  • Experience in managing a website and/or overseeing matter management protocols or self-service tools is a plus.

  • Strong budget management skills, including facility with Excel.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong work ethic with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent judgement with a self-starter mentality and ability to learn quickly.

  • Bilingualism is a significant advantage.
